Tearing down barriers to accessing research: The Open Access Button

A very neat tool to visualize the ubiquity of paywalls that restrict the access to scientific results and to improve the access to scientific work is now available as a plugin for the most popular webbrowsers.

The Open Access Button allows the user to report whenever he or she hits a paywall while searching for research. The hits are shown on a global map, which contributes to making explicit the extent and ubiquity of paywalls that restrict access to research.

The status so far:

No scientific consensus on GMO safety

The European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER) has made a new contribution to the debate on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture.

In a statement “No scientific consensus on GMO safety” released on 21 October this year and initially signed by 92 scientists, a case is made that, so far, no scientific consensus exists on the assessment of a potential harm caused by genetically modified crops. This refers to GMO food safety, the potential effects of GM food consumption on human health, as well as a potential environmental risk posed by GMO foods and crops.

The statement definitely deserves reading, if not signing.
